Inspired by the “Makerspace” movement that has spread into museums, across the country, our Sparks and Makeshift workshops support learning in an informal, play-focused environment that cultivates an interest in science, technology and design using new technologies and basic tools. These spaces offer scheduled activities where visitors can discover their inner-engineer with no limits except your curiosity and creativity. Sparks is designed to inspire families with younger children while Makeshift is for more in-depth exploration.
Join us for facilitated workshops on select weekends of the month:
Makeshift Weekend Workshops
All programs run from 2-3pm.
January 18 & 19: Mini Robot Ever want your own robot? Take time out to discover some of the robots at the Buffalo Museum of Science! Lego Mindstorm units will be available for participants to use, along with other basic robotic systems. Each participant will also be able to create their own paper robot to bring home.
February 8 & 9: Material Science Part of making anything is using the right materials. The Makeshift space offers demonstrations and activities that are a perfect introduction to the world of design and engineering. Come get your hands wet in our Ooblek, explore the Nanoscale side of materials, and more in this Material Science workshop.
February 22 & 23: Make Your Week Let your artistic side go crazy! Participants can design a custom wood engraving, and watch as our laser engraver “prints” your design.
