Thousands of visiting tribesmen and a few western tourists visit the Goroka festival in September. A preponderance of performers at the Goroka Festival comes from the five Highlands provinces where the largest population of PNG lives. Coffee and timber crops bring the people into contact with more urban areas, thus effecting changes in the daily clothing. However, at sing—sings, weddings, funerals, "big—man" or pay—back ceremonies or deaths, villagers — whether from the valleys between the mountains or within the high mountainous areas — wear their ceremonial costumes that fit the occasions.
