Harold and Mary Cohen : The Papua New Guinea Slide Collection
Object ID:
Papua New Guinea
Each performer in this Highlands group wears a large triangulated bamboo and vine framework structure covered with white chicken feathers that requires careful balance to avoid toppling. The faces and bodies are painted with orange clay and black charcoal with tree oil or pig's grease to make the body shine. Each carries his own individually decorated and painted kundu hour—glass drum. The child in front has his own drum scaled to his size.
