Papua New Guinea
Fergusson is the largest of three islands in the D'Entrecasteaux group in Milne Bay Province near the eastern tip of New Guinea in the Solomon Sea. Villagers wash their clothes, boil foods and use the mineral—laden waters for healing. Tales are told of retribution between husbands and staying wives, suicide, religious misconduct, and societal missteps. Large birdwing butterflies of iridescent blues and greens land on passersby fleetingly.
