Kitava Island is one of the Trobriand Group of small islands off the east coast of Milne Bay. A plaque at the entrance to the Kitava Community School dates its origin, 1962. Like all of the Trobriand Islands, clans of Kitava are based on descent through mothers. Fathers also bequeath property rights to their children from their own matrilineal line.
