Girls in Cotton Dresses, Red Head bands
Kitava Island, Papua New Guinea
Trobriand Group:

Six girls line up in the foreground wearing red head bands on their heads, and multiple colored cotton skirts. They are topless but wear foliage and floral arm bands. Other girls are seen behind them and other people watch from the background. Building in background as well.

A close—up of the performing girls shows the one—story school behind them. Kitava Island is one of the Trobriand Group of small islands off the east coast of Milne Bay. Each week at the school, Kitava islanders wear their traditional dress and sing, dance, and tell the tales of their heritage. Both boys and girls perform, but separately.
