Stilt Houses, Water Grasses
Kandangai, Middle Sepik, Papua New Guinea
Diagonal line of three stilt houses over the water, Grasses in the water. Thatched roof, woven fiber exterior.

Three stilt houses can be seen in midst of grasses that appear when the water is at low level. Canoes are impeded from movement; therefore, Kandangai, one of the 25 Iatmul fishing and horticultural villages along the lowlands of the Middle Sepik River, cannot have communications with other villages. Kandangai, like many of the Iatmul villages, has no electricity or telephone.
