Harold and Mary Cohen : The Papua New Guinea Slide Collection
Object ID:
Papua New Guinea
A dancer from Obura wears his tribe's name on a simple flat sign on his back. He is from the Wonenara District of the Eastern Highlands. It's capital is Lamani. A large cowrie shell hangs from his neck. His waistband of nassarius shells holds up his decorations of plant leaves, cowrie shells, and a few strands of dried plants that are also seen on his shins. Some orange clay markings are drawn on his face, chest and arms. In the background are ornately decorated dancers with cassowary feather plumes on their headpieces.
