Dei Dei Hot Springs, Fergusson Island, Papua New Guinea
D'Entrecasteaux Group:

Color image taken looking down into a deep hot spring from the edge. Steam rises from the pool.

People must watch where they walk along the pools of water where hot springs suddenly spout scalding water and minerals at Dei Dei on Fergusson Island, the largest of three in the D'Entrecasteaux group of islands in Milne Bay Province near the eastern tip of New Guinea in the Solomon Sea. Villagers wash their clothes, boil foods, and use the mineral—laden waters for healing. Tales are told of retribution between husbands and straying wives, suicide, religious misconduct, and societal missteps.
