Object ID:
6.01.0113.HMC
Place:
Papua New Guinea
Description:
Men of several tribes along the western border of Papua New Guinea wear little or no clothing except for a penis gourd (phallocrypt) that is tied to the waist with string and attached to a waist band. Members of this tribe cover their entire body surfaces with bright red paint that is made shiny with rubbing on tree oils or pig fat to increase sheen. Headbands support the creamy yellow plumes from the Lesser or the Greater Bird of Paradise. The man on the left has tucked a whole bird into his headband.
