Object ID:

Place:
Papua New Guinea
Description:
Highlanders of this group have an identifying sign, "Drumba Fowe, Langan EHP." There is much variation within the group in their body decoration and headdresses. Bird of paradise feathers and plumes are favorites: tall feathers of the Astrapia are mixed with the soft orange plumes of the red—plumed Count Raggi's bird of paradise. Small orange feathers of parrots and bower birds are used in the headbands. One man wears a shell in the middle of his forehead. His headdress has white tail feathers of the cockatoo and short black feathers.
