Northern Islands of the Solomon Sea, Papua New Guinea
Birds of prey, of many genera, are frequently seen at water's edge on the northern islands among the Solomon Sea. Birds are significant in the Papuan life. They provide important sources of protein for the villagers since there are few mammals and most are very small, such as the cuscus marsupial or the tree kangaroo, except for prized pigs. Feathers are in integral part of their ceremonial costumes in ritual dances. A bird figures into many of the tribal customs and beliefs.
