Harold and Mary Cohen : The Papua New Guinea Slide Collection
Object ID:
Gushing & Steam
Dei Dei Hot Springs, Fergusson Island, Papua New Guinea
D'Entrecasteaux Group:

Color image of larger gushing geyser out of a deeper crevice in the ground. Green foliage/forest seen in the background. Steam rolls up from the ground from the hot spring.

Steam from large hot springs obscures other craters and a view towards the dense jungles of Dei Dei on Fergusson Island, the largest of three islands in the D'Entrecasteaux group in Milne Bay Province near the eastern tip of New Guinea in the Solomon Sea. Villagers wash their clothes, cook food, and use the mineral—laden waters for healing. Tales are told of retribution between husbands and straying wives, suicide, religious misconduct, and societal missteps.
