Dobu Island, Papua New Guinea
D'Entrecasteaux Group:

Color image of eleven rows of fibre that lay in preparation to make thatched roofing on the ground.

Typical roof construction throughout the islands of the Solomon and Bismark Seas, palm or fern fronds are cut from the stems and tied into layers with woven stems. When the side is completed, the villagers raise the thatch onto the house structure made up of either jointed stems of bamboo or tall and slim indigenous trees.
