Canoe Splash Board
Trobriand Group, Kumwegeia Village, Papua New Guinea
Decoratively carved and faded canoe splash board with crocodile fashioned tip. Canoe is docked.
A close—up of a prow— board at the bow of a dugout outrigger canoe shows details of both. The bow is the head of a closed—mouth crocodile. The prow—board longitudinal piece has the traditional carved spirals. In addition, a human being sits in the top with his hands and legs outspread. Curving snakes also seem to look up to the eyes of a human being. A second carved and curving abstract face seems to be looking forward. Prow—boards of the Trobriand Islands are considered the most artistic and complex in the Massin islands.
