Object ID:

Place:
Papua New Guinea
Description:
Two women face other performing groups. Both men and women Highlanders of this tribe wear head caps made of either coir, a stiff coarse fiber from the outer husk of coconut, or twisted fibers plant stems that are braided. These are decorated with small trade store beads and chicken feathers.

A cap's cone shape supports the various feathers. Their waistbands hold strips of palm leaves that cover layers of skirts made from dried river grasses. Dabs of black and orange paint complete their ornamentation.
