Women at Work, Grass Skirts
Trobriand Group, Kumwegeia Village, Papua New Guinea
Three women walk from the top of a hill down towards a thatched roof structure.. Grassy lawn and tall tropical forest in the background.

Women of the Kumewegeia village wear only skirts made of strips of pandanus or palm leaves that have been colored with natural and commercial dyes. The woman on the right wears a bilum bag in bright commercial dyes. Bilums are net bags for carrying many things, including children, vegetables, fruit, wood, household goods, and suckling pigs. Coconut palm fibers, bark cloth, and pandanus palm leaves are made into strands and knotted into patterns. Men also carry bilum bags.
