Harold and Mary Cohen : The Papua New Guinea Slide Collection
Object ID:
6.01.0205.HMC
Place:
Papua New Guinea
Description:
Self—decoration appears less emphasized in these Highlanders. Instead, they build stark white standards that they carry on their backs. Each frame is built from long thin bamboo strips or wood and covered with white chicken feathers. The central performer's massive frame has tall black Astrapia tail feathers at the top and a few blackbird feathers on the side. Other frames are shorter. The one to the left is topped with dried grasses. The one to the right has a few pink plumes from the bird of paradise. Each person wears a headband from skins of the cus cus marsupial or tree kangaroo. Only a few wear skirts of dyed—blue cloth strips. There is no uniformity in headdresses or attire.
