Middle Sepik River, Papua New Guinea
Mountains can be seen in the background. Sitting in the shade of two trees, villagers wait. They may be taking a break from work and the hot sun or waiting for a canoe to ferry them to another one of the 25 Iatmul villagers, along the Middle Sepik River. There is no other means of transportation available on the small islands. During rainy season the river swells, covering ground under the houses. During dry season, boats cannot move.
