A Western Province, Samo tribesman poses in his full regalia as chief dancer. His headdress of white cockatoo feathers with interspersed russet plumage of the Raggiana bird of paradise is as tall as he is. His face, chest, arms and legs are carefully painted with brown designs outlined in which clay. His waist band is also painted with undulating bands of white and brown. His short apron follows the same color pattern. Streamers of shredded palm leaves cover his backside, from neck to bare feet. Fellow tribesmen stand with their backs to him, showing their shorter skirts and their large bilum net bags made of knotted plant fibers in which can be carried vegetables, fruit, wood, household goods, babies and suckling pigs.
