Landscape image overlooking blue water to a sandy shoreline with thatched roof housing structures and tropical forest.

Kumwegeia Village, on Kitava Island, one of the small Trobriand Group, on the east coast of Milne Bay Province. is seen from the Solomon Sea. Sparse houses on stilts sit at the water's edge, among the dense woods that reach up the mountains. Islands in the Massim area of the extreme southeastern tip of Papua New Guinea were linked by the kula trading cycle. Hardwood carvings of Kiriwina were traded with pottery from the Amphlett Islands and greenstone blades from Muyna (Woodlark Island).
