Grades Pre-K - 2
Workshops are hands-on, minds-on, and customized to be age-appropriate.
They are specifically designed to encourage inquiry and student-directed learning.
Fee: $8 per student includes admission
1 hour theme-based workshops, Limit: 30 students (* including outdoor classroom when weather permits)
For more information or if you would like to discuss customizing a program to suit your needs please call 716.896.5200 x338 or museumreservations@sciencebuff.org.
INSECTIGATION *
Students will gain first hand knowledge of the insect world. Through hands-on experiences they will learn about the body parts, habitats, and life stages of insects. Students will explore the importance of insects in the natural world while gaining an understanding of the benefits we all gain from these creepy crawly creatures.
NATURE SENSE-SATIONS *
Exploring natural objects with all five senses helps children to make discoveries. Students will gain a better understanding of how animals’ characteristics help them to adapt to their environment. Students use their senses to help identify nature’s wonders – just like a scientist!
SENSATIONAL SEASONS *
Why do we have four seasons and what makes each one so special? Students will learn about the adaptations animals and humans have to cope with the seasonal changes throughout the year. They will become weather watchers looking for the signs that can help them “read” the weather.
SIMPLE MACHINES MADE SIMPLE
What are simple machines? Ramps, balls, levers, we use them everyday but do not even notice them. Students will explore how they help us to do work and how they work together to make more complex machines. Students can decide for themselves if simple machines are something man invented or something learned from the natural world.
LIFE CYCLES *
Discover which animals come from eggs. Do all animal young look like the adults? What adaptations do animals have that help protect their young from danger? Students will learn the answers to these questions and how we can help protect animals in nature.
DYNAMIC DINOSAURS AND FASCINATING FOSSILS
How do we know dinosaurs existed anyway? What did they eat? Was their world like ours? What are those strange shapes in the rocks you find along the streams or in your backyard? Investigating the prehistoric worlds using fossils and displays, students will use their powers of deduction in our workshop and tour to put together the puzzle of the prehistoric.
COMMON SENSES
What are our senses? How do they help us interpret our world? Students will explore how their senses interact to help them better understand the world around them.
WATER. WATER EVERYWHERE
Students will explore the water cycle and the many states of water from its physical and chemical characteristics to its connection to all earth systems.
BODIES ARE US…..
Choose three of the different components of human experience to investigate. Each topic includes interactive experiences and correlations with other species.
- Senses—making our way in the world
- Genetics—why we are who we are
- Digestion—breaking it down-- a cast of thousands
- Respiration—a process of all living things—but, check out the different ways to do it
- Skeleton—make no bones about it, there’s more than one way to shape an organism
- Muscles—do the locomotion with me—the many moves of muscles
ART OF SCIENCE Mini Programs
Science based art/craft projects ($7 includes admission)
30 minute program designed to fit in to the shorter Early Childhood field trip time
Theme based on teacher request
Pre-registration required For more information or to reserve a date, please call 716.896.5200 x383.
Grades 2 - 8

CLASSIFICATION: THAT’S THE NAME OF THE GAME!
Scientists have spent centuries organizing everything in the universe into different groups and categories. Whether it’s plants, animals, rocks, or stars, there has to be a way to connect things if they are to make sense to us. Students will explore some of the ways classification occurs through hands-on, minds-on activities and gallery adventures. This workshop extends the Classification Tour to include more opportunities to engage with our educational collections.
Limit: 60 students
CRIME INVESTIGATION
Use math, chemistry, and physics in the guise of footprints, ransom notes, and fingerprints to solve a crime in much the same way police officers and forensic scientists do. Students will learn the science behind the scenes.
Limit: 60 students
BIODIVERSITY BLITZ: ANIMALS OF OUR REGION
Weave the web of life in the Niagara Frontier! Through a variety of interactive experiences, students will explore how different species live and depend on each other. They’ll also learn about the three levels of diversity – genetics, habitat, and species.
Limit: 60 students
WHEM ANKH: THE CYCLE OF LIFE IN ANCIENT EGYPT
Walk through the lives of ancient Egyptians. Discover how they cooked, the games they played, and the kind of houses in which they lived. Students will also learn about the religion of ancient Egypt and see real mummies!
Limit: 120 students
OUR PLACE IN SPACE
Take a journey through the Buffalo Museum of Science astronomy exhibit, Our Place in Space. Add fun and excitement to your students’ study of space concepts. They’ll experiment with light, view the night sky from anywhere in the solar system, look at the earth from space using satellite technology systems, and check out telescope technology.
Limit: 50 students
DESIGN CHALLENGES
These workshops are geared to introduce students to engineering design. By participating in a hands-on activity, students will be asked to design, build, and test a prototype solution to a given problem. Students enjoy a fun and engaging experience while gaining knowledge of the engineering and innovation processes. Limit: 60 students
Choose from:
- MAROONED: Can you design the tools to survive being stranded on a deserted island on the Niagara River?
- JUNKYARD DESIGN: Can you build a new invention out of an old one?

New York “Rocks” Grades 3 - 8
There is nothing in this world that cannot be taken back to the rocks and minerals that surround us. What do the geologic marvels of our own Western New York area tell us about the formation of the area? How have they shaped our industry and interests? Who lived here before? Lots of questions….sometimes the answers are written in stone.
Healthy Bodies Grades 3-12
Delve deeper into the human body and the interactions between body systems. Students will realize the interconnectedness of the body systems and explore how nutrition and exercise impact quality of health. Diet related diseases (diabetes, heart disease, etc) will also be discussed.
Hard Rock Café Grades 3-12
From rocks and minerals to volcanoes and earthquakes, have your students discover their own story of the Rock Cycle. Students will examine rocks, minerals, fossils and their relevance to the many facets of our everyday life.
Weather Whys Grades 3-12
Buffalo is known for its weather, but what are the reasons for the seasons? Students will explore the ins and outs of planetary weather, how it affects us locally, and how weather impacts our lives and the marvelous earth around us.
Warning: There’s a Warming Grades 5-12
If the weather in Western New York gets warmer, how would that affect us? Explore climate change, the causes and effects of global energy systems, and alternative energies. Students will investigate the carbon cycle, planetary energy systems, and alternative energy solutions.
