Explorations Gallery

Home > Exhibits > Explorations Gallery

The Explorations Gallery is a hands-on, interactive gallery designed for children ages 2 to 7. Explorations provides our youngest visitors with opportunities to interact with their parents, teachers, and caregivers in an area with hands-on learning opportunities.

The Explorations Gallery is utilized as a pre-booked, hands-on learning classroom Wednesday through Friday between 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM (*except for the first Thursday of each month).  Groups and classes that pre-book this space are given exclusive use of the gallery with a museum facilitator.   On weekends, the gallery has open access during regular museum hours. If there are no groups booked in CWE during a Wednesday through Friday morning, the Gallery will be open for the general public.

Each of the areas in the Explorations Gallery is frequently changed to keep the gallery fresh and stimulating for our visitors. Some of the hands-on activities in include:

A Water Table with a variety of contents ranging from measuring cups to shells and boats.

Discovery Areas with a science focus invite exploration.

Cultural Dramatic Play Area which will be changed often to reflect different cultures. This area may be set up with props and costume pieces from Mexico, Africa, or with Native American furs and food sources.

Mastodon Dig Area opens up all kinds of discussions about the science of paleontology, extinction, and studying bones.

An Infant/ Toddler area designed to be a quiet corner for our young guests to explore is available in the Explorations Gallery.

Workshops are available for Pre-K through 2nd Grade students, Home School Groups, or other groups of 10 or more participants. A variety of themes are offered and workshops can be customized to meet the needs of the group. To book a workshop or for more information please call (716) 896 5200 x 338.
