Collection Description The collections of the Division of Invertebrate Zoology include an estimated 150,000 insects that are pinned and in envelopes; 2400 vials of aquatic insects (especially caddisflies and winter stoneflies), spiders (mostly collected from buildings in the Niagara Region), and other soft-bodied arthropods; and 34,000 mollusks. Dry insect collections are housed in the Gilbert J. and Clara T. Yager Entomology Laboratory, renovated in 1995 with the generous support of Mr. and Mrs. Yager. The insect collection is rich in Lepidoptera, including 8200 specimens of cutworm, owlet and underwing moths (family Noctuidae) from North America, the majority of which were collected prior to 1930, as well as hawk moths (family Sphingidae) and various beetles (order Coleoptera) collected in Venezuela by Harold and Mary Cohen during 1979-1981. The Robertson collection of freshwater mussels from the late 19th and early 20th centuries is also scientifically significant. Entomological Collection Holdings
