Collections Management Intern
Description: The Buffalo Museum of Science (BMS) internship program is designed to provide students with an introduction to the standards of museum practice and provide hands-on experience in Collections Management. Collections Management ensures museum collections are accessible, housed under proper environmental conditions and are protected while in storage and on exhibit. The internship program at the BMS provides students with an opportunity to work on projects such as monitoring environmental conditions in collections storage and exhibit areas, object handling, updating object records, databasing, exhibit installation and de-installation, and conducting collections inventories. The primary focus of the internship is a collections inventory and database project using PastPerfect Museum Software. The internship will expose students to multiple facets of collections care and long-term preservation goals.
Responsibilities:
- Carry out weekly environmental monitoring
- Object handling
- Condition reports
- Conduct collections inventories
- Update and edit records in PastPerfect Museum Software database
- Other tasks as assigned
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree completed or in-progress in Anthropology, Art History, Museum Studies or related field.
Candidates must be able to handle objects with extreme care, pay careful attention to detail and keep clear, accurate records.
Experience working in an archival or museum setting preferred.
Experience with PastPerfect Museum Software preferred.
Details:
Internships are unpaid; however, academic credit can be arranged. Hours are flexible, Monday through Friday, 9am-5pm. Interns are expected to commit at least 7 hours per week on a fixed schedule.
Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis, but priority is given to applications received before January 15th for the spring term (January-May), May 1st for the summer term (May-August), and August 15th for the fall term (August-December).
