Nature Sanctuary Society of Western New York Background The Nature Sanctuary Society of Western New York, Inc. was founded in 1934 by “Prof” William P. Alexander and associates. Purpose:"to acquire, own, and manage sanctuaries for the protection, preservation, and conservation of wild life, and to promote educational programs and scientific research relative to nature preserves". Meetings Regular Membership meetings are held on the third Thursdays of March and October at 7:30 PM at the Harlem Road Community Center, Harlem Road corner of Lincoln St. in Snyder. A speaker covering a natural history subject is featured at each meeting. Preserves of the Nature Sanctuary Society of Western New York, Inc. William Prindle Alexander Preserve - 118 acres with some old-growth forest in Zoar Valley. Frederick Houghton Preserve - 23 acres (primarily sphagnum bog) near Springville. Saturday, June 28, 2008 - Annual field outing to Houghton and Furman Preserves near Springville with a visit to nearby Great Bear Springs. Leader, Dick Rosche
