Orangutan-Human Character -- Thick Molar Enamel

Humans and orangutans are distinctive among extant apes in the development of thick molar enamel. Some studies (e.g Martin, 1985) have attempted to portray thick dental enamel as a plesiomorphic character for the great apes so that the condition of thin enamel in the African apes is portrayed as a derived condition. This scenario is obtained only by the assumption that African apes are more closely related to humans than orangutans.
