Color, and the way we see color, influences everything we do. Color in nature, in all its hues, patterns, and tones, influences survival, attraction, reflection, and life’s regeneration.

But do we ever stop to think about color and what life would be like without it?

From our collections, a kaleidoscope of examples of the vital roles color plays in our world, matched with a vibrant array of thought-provoking activities involving science, art, ancient artifacts, and natural specimens.

In Palette of Life, visitors can experience color in ways they've never experienced it before.

   Perception of Color
How would you see the world if you were colorblind? Compare your normal vision to that of the most common color blindness, Deuteranomaly (red perception deficiency)

   Roomful of Color
Enter our "Roomful of Color" to experiment with the effects of different light sources on colors of both man-made and natural items from our collections.

   Colors of Attraction
Consider the functions of color in nature and society. Why do male birds usually display colorful feathers while the famales are brown?

   Living Mural
Contribute to the "Living Mural", an interactive area for art, impressions, provocative questions and colorful collaborations.

   COLOR LAB
Once visitors enter the Color Lab through the “Spectrum Tunnel”, they can learn about, and experiment with, color in ways you never thought of, and ponder the impacts and ramifications of color, in both the natural and man made worlds.

In the COLOR LAB, visitors will:

EXPERIENCE...
how our color perception differs from that of other species

LEARN...
the meaning of color in different cultures, exemplified by the Museum's collections

INVESTIGATE...
how color affects our emotions

EXPLORE...
the functions of color in warning, protection and attraction

LOOK CLOSER...
at how we use color as an identification tool in our everyday lives

...AND MORE!
