Evolutionary Biology Behind the Scenes

Duration: Up to two hours

Charge: $125 (or $150 for 15-20 people)

Audience: College undergraduate and senior high school classes. Adult life-long learners.

Facilitator: Dr. John Grehan

Qualifications: John Grehan has a Ph.D in zoology with a BS in botany and zoology. He has had training in the classification and biology of all major animal and plant groups and has published scientific articles and a book dealing with evolutionary theory and evolutionary research (see http://www.sciencebuff.org/jgrehan.htm).

Content: General aspects of animal and plant diversity, classification, and evolution will be demonstrated in a tour of the museum's vertebrate, invertebrate, botanical, and geological collections. The role and contribution of natural history collections in the study of evolutionary variation and long and short-term changes in organisms and environments will be illustrated.. Highlighted topics include primate evolution and human origins, post-Pleistocene ecology in western New York, and significant elements of plant and animal diversity. Other elements may be included upon request where possible.
