Air Quality Index for Kids!
EPA's new Air Quality site discusses what makes air dirty and which people are most at risk for getting sick from air pollution. This site, probably best suited for elementary schoolers, is arranged so that "next" buttons turn the virtual pages, taking young readers through each lesson. The site also furnishes a dictionary, "What can I do?" section and games.

Exploratorium -- Frogs
This new exhibit from the Exploratorium offers a peek into the world of Kermit’s kin. Aimed at younger users, the site features several RealPlayer-enhanced feature stories on frogs, frog-researchers, and frog myths; a brief tour of Frog City USA; and interactive exhibits exploring frog calls and camouflage in nature. Additional features include instructions for making a rainstick, audio recordings of the rainforest, and a collection of annotated frog links.

Footprints in the Desert
An interdisciplinary program that integrates classroom research, hands-on field studies, and technology. students explore Arizona's natural environments through field experiences at a variety of local life zones. They use scientific processes to gather data on field studies, record samplings of plants and animals in a specific area, analyze the field data by creating spreadsheets, and post the analyzed data on the World Wide Web.

FT Exploring
FT Exploring is a fun award winning site that explores energy and other basic science principles and shows how the same fundamental principles control how things work in nature, living organisms, and human technology. The articles are carefully researched, accurate, easy to understand, and according to my e-mail responses, funny. In addition to providing good basic explanations, the creative thought-provoking approach helps to generate an interest in science and technology.

Smithsonian Magazine provides a safe, educational, free and fun place for kids ages 8-16 on the World Wide Web. There are message boards filled with questions to get kids from all over the world talking to each other and thinking creatively. Peace Corps' Kids World
The Corps' Kids World is the site is designed for children in middle school, but also features content and activities for children in elementary school. It contains content, colors, graphics, games, and language designed to educate and entertain children about world geography and the cultures of other countries. It allows children of all ages to send electronic postcards, read folk tales from around the world, download coloring pages, and test their geography savvy with an interactive flash game. In addition, the children's section reinforces the importance of service, and how young people can make a difference in the lives of other people through service and volunteerism.

People-Pet Partnership's Learning and Living Together: Building the Human-Animal Bond
Washington State University's College of Veterinary Medicine Online Curriculum educates youth by promoting science and general education, encouraging the proper treatment of companion animals, and building leadership skills through relationships with companion animals. The project is composed of educational modules that organize learning around projects. The different modules involve complex tasks based on challenging problems. The activities of the website are aligned with the National Science Education Standards (NSES). You will need Flash 6 in order to see the curriculum.

US Department of Agriculture Science 4 Kids
Aimed at kids ages eight to thirteen with an interest in science. Introduces ARS projects in a collection of short stories. The homepage uses graphics to link to the various sections -- clicking on the catfish takes users to the Aquaculture section, the bee to Insects, and so on. Science Project help is available, and students who wish to learn more about certain topics or find resources for school reports can follow links to special resources.

USGS Learning Web
The Learning Web, a portion of the USGS website, is dedicated to K-12 education and life-long learning. Explore things on, in, around and about the Earth such as land, water, plants and animals, and maps.

What's Up With Our Nation's Water?
The US Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) new water quality website provides many educational resources for K-12 teachers. A recently posted one is the "What's Up With Our Nation's Water?" page, looking at how water quality is measured, what toxins are found in drinking water, and defining wetlands and groundwater. Highlights include a "What can I do?" section and suggested science projects. Colorful artwork by young people accompanies the text.

White House Kids
White House Kids offers an appealing variety of information geared toward elementary and middle-school age students. Take the walking tour of the White House led by Spotty, the President and First Lady's English Springer Spaniel; or enjoy numerous links to historical and biographical points of interest, with quizzes and self-correcting answer keys. The site stresses reading as its central theme. Thus, each featured figure, pets and humans alike, offers one or more favorite book references.
