The Buffalo Museum of Science offers homeschool programs for grades K-9 on a variety of topics and themes, and most of all - fun!

PRICING: $100 per student per session, BMS members save 10%. If you are a Museum member, be sure to login or register using the email address associated with your membership prior to checkout and the discount will be automatically applied. Chemistry

October 14, 21, 28* and November 4 (pre-register by October 7)

  • Grades K-2

    Changing seasons have more to do with chemical and temperature fluctuations than pretty colors and new flowers. Leaves, apples and tulips have their secrets to tel about why and how these changes happen.

    Everything is made out of chemicals. We all know H2O is water, but what does it mean? Some things dissolve - some don't. Some things mix - some don't Chemistry is a world of mystery and magic.

Weather & Earth Systems

January 13, 20, 27* and February 3 (pre-register by January 6)

    Let's review what we know about the water cycle, water shed, seasonal changes, earth core, ocean currents and plate tectonics. Explore how these systems and the weather we love to watch work together.

    Earth is a series of systems. Atmosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere, geosphere, pedosphere, biosphere, and even the magnetosphere - imagine all the possibilities we have to explore.

    From the geosphere to the atmosphere, discover the different fields of Earth Science using inquiry and the scientific method. Activities will deal with geology and weather, focusing on the interactions between air, water and land.

Engineering

    Does it matter what materials you use to build? Can you build a plane out of bricks, or a bridge out of cubes of sugar? Join us as we explore structures, materials, design, function, and fun!

    THIS SESSION IS SOLD OUT. Engineering is a fancy word for problem solving. It's a part of every science, you do it every day. We'll take engineering to a new level and have fun building and inventing.

    Discover the nuts and bolts of engineering. Students will design a structure, create a model, and construct it in its life-size form. In addition to our designing and building component, students will become well versed in our latest technology including laser engraving and 3D printing.

Insects / Biodiversity / Ecosystems

    THIS PROGRAM HAS BEEN CANCELED. How do we all fit together in this world? From the tiniest insect to the largest animal, we are all connected. Discover the unique physical and behavioral adaptations of animals all over the globe, the life and death struggles of survival and the complex food webs that exist.

    "The world is so full of a number of things, I'm sure we should all be as happy as kings". It's not only true, but essential to existence that there is diversity in ecosystems and all the things those ecosystems contain. We will pay special attention to the often overlooked influence of insects and their kin.

    THIS PROGRAM HAS BEEN CANCELED. Topics will include biomes vs ecosystems, population biology, biogeochemical cycles, and modern environmental concerns. Students will get a hands-on look at the Museum's vast zoology, entomology, and ornithology collections.

Biology / Human Health / Fitness / Nutrition

May 19*, June 2, 9 and 16 (pre-register by May 12

  • Grades K-1

    Most of us know what we should do to be healthy: eat well, get a good nights sleep and stay physically active. We will join forces to keep track of how we are doing in these areas and find fun ways to be healthy.

    Classes will focus on anatomy, function, and the interconnectedness of all systems within the human body. Students will also dive into fitness and nutrition, discussing what we need to do to stay healthy.
