Director of Development

Summary of Position

Reporting to the President and CEO, the Director of Development is responsible for the strategic management, oversight and implementation of all fundraising efforts of the Buffalo Museum of Science and Tifft Nature Preserve. This position works closely and independently with institutional leadership including members of the Board of Managers and other key volunteers, and senior staff leaders throughout the organization. As part of the Society staff leadership team, the Director will contribute to developing and implementing organization-wide strategies and protocols. The position supervises three professional employees, will carry a portfolio of approximately 50 donors and prospects, and will take the lead in developing competitive grant proposals. The position is accountable for meeting and exceeding total revenue goals in the range of $1 - $2 million annually, and continuously growing and diversifying the supporter base.

Summary of Position

The Kellogg Observatory Manager/Astronomy Facilitator of Learning is dedicated to providing outstanding astronomy/observatory experiences to audiences of all ages with a variety of background knowledge. This position plays a critical role to develop the Museum’s standing as a premier resource for astronomy experiences and in communicating astronomical events to the community in alignment with the Society’s mission, vision, strategic plan and education pedagogy, which is rich in inquiry-based, user-directed discovery learning. This manager will be responsible for development and management of the astronomy program and full array of astronomy offerings both in house and off site. We seek a person with demonstrated experience in hands-on astronomical observation and instrumentation, program management, a desire to collaborate, a zest for public outreach, and strong communication skills. This individual is to work hand-in-hand with the Public Programs, Community/Adult Programs and Science Communicator/School Services Manager to provide seamless and meaningful experiences for all of our audiences, helping to inspire lifelong learners and create lasting memories.

Museum Ambassador

The Museum Ambassador is the initial interface between the Museum and our guest and is responsible for all admissions, cinema and retail transactions. The ideal candidate is driven to provide, from start to finish, an exceptional guest experience. Museum Ambassador’s help guests have the best possible experience through friendly, positive interactions that make them feel like “Rock Stars.”

Staff accessibility is a top priority for our guests, and staff should always be available to serve where needed. Staff should be comfortable engaging with visitors and also be aware of general Museum and Tifft offerings such as workshops, camps and special events. This staff member’s primary responsibility is to provide informative, engaging and fun learning experiences that will inspire curiosity and awe. This happens is a variety of situations and locations ranging from personnel facilitated experiences, to short interactive activities, to exhibit facilitation and demonstrations. A Facilitator of Guest Experience will help guests have the best possible experience through friendly, positive interactions that make them feel like “Rock Stars”. Additionally, this staff person will maintain a controlled and positive learning environment.

The Facilitator of Guest Experience should be comfortable discussing topics within assigned Science Studios and also be aware of general Museum offerings such as workshops, camps and special events.
