Everything, ooey, gooey, sticky and FUN - special extended hours!


On Saturday, March 25th from 10am-6pm, join the Buffalo Museum of Science for Messfest! Our annual celebration of everything ooey, gooey, sticky and fun will take place throughout the Museum and feature messy, hands-on activities for all ages! Activities are included with general Museum admission and free for members.

Admission to Messfest is included with general Museum admission and FREE for BMS Members. There is an additional charge for Messtacular! performances.

Messtacular! Stage Show Performances: Join in on the fun with our "Professor of Mess" and experience the messiest of science experiments including: elephant toothpaste, mentos fountains, liquid nitrogen explosion and the Bernoulli toilet paper shooter! (each show is approximately 40 minutes in length)

Tickets for Stage Show performances are available at the Museum ($5 non-members; $3 BMS Members)! Shows will take place at: 10:30am, 12:30pm, 2:30pm, and 4:30pm

    Join in the fun with messy, hands-on activities throughout the day, including:


    Shaving Cream Chaos: Explorations Sink your hands into some shaving cream. It's good clean fun!

    Black Light Mess: Jaeger Make a mess and watch it glow under an ultraviolet light!

    Polymer Slime: Earth Create a chemical reaction and watch as a household glue changes before your eyes

    Oobleck: Is it a solid? Or a liquid? Sink your hands into this non-Newtonian fluid!

    Strawberry DNA Smash: Create your own strawberry DNA necklace by smashing berries and mixing liquids.

    Pottery Put Together: Archaeologists make sense of the messes of the past. Reassemble clay tiles to solve ancient mysteries!

    Scat? What's that? Check out models of animal droppings and figure out what they eat.

    Spaghetti Tower Challenge: Build the tallest structure out of dried spaghetti and marshmallows

    Worming Around: Dig up, investigate, and explore (artificial) worms in our large worm troughs

    Splatter Paint Hats: Guests will have the opportunity to sign up and decorate their own hats with splatter paint

    Diaper Science: How do disposable diapers catch all that water? Hydrogels! Experiment with these incredible polymers!

    Indoor Snow: Firma Using two everyday household ingredients, make your own "snow"!

    Sensory Playground: OME Touch, feel and squish different materials and different textures.

    Splatter Hats! 10:15am - 3:15pm Design a beautiful, colorful disaster! Be inspired by the bright vibrant colors of the Holi Festival in India and Nepal. Each participant will create their own splatter paint hat to take home. Each participant will receive one hat to design, parents who will not be creating their own hat do not need to register. All ages welcome, those under the age of 6 will need parent assistance. 7 Time Slots are available. Click on the links below to register.
