"Is the Observatory open?"

Since our rooftop observatory closed to the public in 1999, this has been the question asked most by our members, visitors and supporters. Some recall childhood visits for astronomy lessons and the excitement of exploring a world beyond. Others catch the familiar yet distant dome out of the corner of their eye from the Kensington Expressway and wonder what is next for this historical icon.

With the generous support of our Board of Managers, community foundations, and philanthropic corporations and individuals, we have raised $6.5 million dollars over the last four years to complete the transformation of seven science studios. Our final phase will be the $1.2 million restoration of our observatory and the completion of our eighth and final science studio on the fourth floor of the museum.

With the generous support of our community,
future generations will…

See the Changes…

Reopening the observatory will complete our four-year, multi-million dollar campaign to transform all of the Museum’s permanent gallery spaces into interactive, changeable, and educational spaces that combine technology with pieces from our collection of 700,000 artifacts.

See a World Beyond…

The restored observatory and new aerospace studio will expose a new generation to astronomy, including the opportunity to participate in daytime solar observing from the fourth floor studio using the latest technological advances.

See the Future…

With the completion of our master exhibit plan, the Museum will essentially be brand new. We are very excited to continue inspiring the curious minds of future astronomers, engineers, biologists, and beyond with new and relevant STEM-based experiences.

By raising the remaining $1.2 million needed to complete our transformation, the Museum will provide ADA-compliant access to the rooftop with the installation of a new elevator connecting the fourth floor to the rooftop.

The current Our Place In Space exhibit on the fourth floor will be transformed into an interactive studio focusing on aerospace and the marvels of the sun, including a digital projection from the observatory for daytime solar observing.
