Tifft Guided Tours

Tifft Nature Preserve offers guided tours for students of all ages. These tours support the NYS MST Standards and enhance science curriculums for Pre-K through high school classes through inquiry-based outdoor learning experiences. Choose from the fascinating topics listed below:. 
 

Pre-registration required
Availability: Tuesday - Friday
Duration: PRE-K & K TOURS: 1 hour
ALL OTHER GRADE LEVEL TOURS: 1 - 1 1⁄2 hours
Fee: $6.00 per person and additional adults
Limit: 3 classes per session, pre-registration required
Chaperones: One adult is required for every 10 children for all groups.

Grades Pre-K – 2


ANIMAL HOMES AND HABITATS

Available All Year
Students study the characteristics of various habitats including fields, woods, and aquatic areas and learn how animals adapt to their preferred environments.


EXPLORING NATURE

Available March-November
Students examine the properties and seasonal characteristics of plants, animals, and other natural objects. We will also explore the interaction between living things and their environment.


NEW! LIFE CYCLES

Available May - August
Students will explore the preserve and search for signs of life cycles. This tour will highlight insect and frog metamorphosis.


NATURE IN WINTER

Available December – February
Students will compare how both plants and animals adapt to harsh winter conditions and learn about the study of animal tracks in the snow. Snowshoeing may be requested ($2 per person) weather permitting.


NEW! NATURE SCENE INVESTIGATION

Available All Year
Students will learn to make observations and draw conclusions and inferences about clues that animals and insects leave behind. 

 

Grades 3 – 12

AQUATIC ADVENTURES

Available April – October
Students will compare and contrast aquatic ecosystems and characteristics of aquatic plants and animals. We will also discuss and observe evidence of ecological succession.


EXPLORING NATURE

Available March – November
Students examine the properties and characteristics of plants, animals, and other natural objects with a focus on life stages. They will also explore the interaction between living things and their environment.


NATURE IN WINTER

Available December – February
Students will compare how both plants and animals adapt to harsh winter conditions and learn about the study of animal tracks in the snow. Snowshoeing may be requested ($2 per person) weather permitting.

NEW! TIFFT HISTORY

Available All Year
Students will learn about reading Tifft’s landscape to see the impact of human activity on ecosystems over time. This tour can include a PowerPoint presentation on the history of Tifft. Please let the reservationist know if you are interested in this presentation.
