These 2-3 hour in-depth science activities provide students with hands-on experiences and have both indoor and outdoor components. Engage your class in a unique, inquiry-based learning opportunity.

Grades Pre-K- 2
Available November – June
Students observe, handle, and examine real animal homes from the collections of the Buffalo Museum of Science and Tifft Nature Preserve and learn why animals build homes. A Tifft facilitator will take students outdoors to experience and learn about the animals and their homes and observe them in their place in nature. Using natural, recycled, or reusable materials, students will construct replicas of animal homes.
SNOW SCIENCE
Available December – February
Learn about winter weather and how animals and plants are able to survive. Students will look for animal evidence on an outdoor hike, use weather monitoring instruments, and compare animal survival adaptations.

URBAN RUNOFF AND WATERSHED EDUCATION PROGRAM
Available in Spring 2010
In Partnership with the Buffalo Urban Outdoor Education Foundation (BUOE), this unique opportunity will expose your students to hands-on water-quality testing, data collection, and making conclusions about Lake Erie's health. Students will discover the science and wonders behind thier local natural resource while learning the ropes around the floating classroom, Spirit of Buffalo, a 73-foot schooner docked at the Erie Canal Harbor Central Wharf in downtown Buffalo. After returning from their sail, students will visit Tifft Nature Preserve's 75-acre cattail marsh to learn about the importance of wetlands in water quality and make connections to their morning experience.

Snowshoeing may be requested for grades 4 and above, weather permitting. Add $2 per student.

IROQUOIS NATIVE AMERICANS
Available November- June
Explore the history and daily lives of the Iroquois. This workshop includes an interpretive walk through the Tifft Nature Preserve and interactive lessons on the domestic responsibilities, inventive tools, and survival of Seneca Native Americans, one of the Six Nations of the Iroquois.
GRADES 5 – 12
AQUATIC ECOLOGY
Available April – October
Students study the characteristics of water plants and animals and examine and test properties of the water itself. To study fishing techniques and actually go fishing, add $2 per student. This informative program is great for older students interested in an extensive study of the waters of the Great Lakes region.
IT'S EASY BEING GREEN
Available November – June
In this workshop, students explore ways everyone can reduce their ecological footprint. We'll explore possible solutions to current environmental challenges while examining consumer products, energy use, technologies, and conservation practices.
