Along with tropical fish, birds display a staggering diversity of colors, from the cryptic brown and grays of nightjars to the brilliant blue and red and yellows of tanagers. Dr. Geoff Hill will explain the pigments and structures that produce this kaleidoscope of coloration and provide framework for understanding the variation that we see among birds. Why are some birds of the same species drab while others are bright? Why do birds appear more colorful in the spring than in the winter? Why are young birds less colorful than adults? This lecture will answer all of these questions, using photographs to bring to life some of natures most beautiful creatures.
