Conversations in Science: How Diversity Boosts Innovation

Speaker: Ms. Bharani Muppavarapu, Doctoral trainee, Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center

Description: How often do you consider what is missing when working on a problem? In 2014 a Harvard economics professor published a study concluding that having a diverse team working collaboratively leads to impactful research. Bharani Muppavarapu will lead a talk exploring how exchanges of ideas and cultures positively influence science, and key steps for achieving diversity and representation in science and U.S. healthcare.

About the Speaker

Ms. Bharani Muppavarapu received a Masters in Biotechnology, with a focus on cancer biology from VIT University, India in 2016.  She is currently pursuing her PhD in Pharmacology and Therapeutics under the mentorship of Dr. Ethan Abel, Associate Professor at Roswell Park. Ms. Muppavarapu’s PhD thesis focuses on targeting the expression of a gene, HNF1A, that promotes tumor progression and drug resistance in pancreatic cancer.

Apart from her academic career, she has an active interest in community organizations focused on education. Ms. Muppavarapu has volunteered as an English teacher, in Make a Difference, a child-education initiative in Vellore, India and is currently a member of the science policy group at Roswell Park. She is passionate about theatre, history, Indian classical/folk music, contemporary fiction and dog-watching.
